Real Education & Advocacy Changes Health

Almost everyone wants to be ranked No. 1 at something. High school students are no different. We understand how important these ranking can be. Will we be in the top 10 percent of our class? Will our football team make it to State? Will we get an acceptance letter from our top choice college? But who wants to be No. 1 in teens becoming parents? May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month and teenREACH is working to prevent unintended teen pregnancy by educating peers with age appropriate, medically -accurate information.

teenREACH equally emphasize both advocacy and education as a means to change Texas’ dubious distinction as first in teen birth rates. teenREACH seeks to incorporate teens in community service, education, and advocacy. Members and supporters of teenREACH believe that teens, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, have the basic right to pursue comprehensive sexual health information without fear, shame or exploitation. Members of teenREACH participate in cross generational, community-based education emphasizing medically accurate sexual health information.

As peer educators and advocates we work throughout National Teen Pregnancy Prevention month and the rest of year to educate our peers as peer health educators and advocate for better sex education. From outreach events at the Warped Tour to dog washes to mall walks to Washington D.C. we go to the heart of the community as well as community leaders to change the dialogue around sex education and, hopefully, Texas’ standing in teen birth rates.

Youth are interviewed on sex education in their communities:
